If you are going in May, then, surely, you have your tickets, right? check them! If you haven't bought your tickets, yet, then start looking at them online, and figure it out...it depends on many things, including what layovers you choose. You're sure to find that you can't do the trip without at least one, possibly two layovers. I'm not sure how it is when you're flying from LA.

Maybe... 10-11 hours. I'm from Madrid, and it took me 8 and a half hours to go to NY, so I think 10-11 hours is the right time.
