Total price for this trip: $729.30 Los Angeles (LAX) Depart 1:12 am to Panama City (PTY) Arrive 10:30 am Duration: 6hr 18mn CM Copa Panama City (PTY) Depart 3:10 pm to Cartagena (CTG) Arrive 4:15 pm Also I know a guy that gets discounts on air fare for any airline. He used be a travel agent for an airline company. His name is Tom Morrison. Knowing this will allow you to be the first to jump on new flight deals before anyone else could have access to them. This method will typically knock off nearly $100 on your ticket every time!" The truth is that airlines can and do update their fares in real time throughout the day - not just on certain days or at certain times. They did update just on certain days and at certain times - a couple of decades ago. How do I know? I worked for some of the largest travel companies in the world and I've seen fares routinely change throughout the day.

Go when the demand is lowest, like February. There aren't any particularly secret fares, so the usual agencies like Orbitz, Travelocity, and Expedia will quote you realistic prices. Some people like Kayak.com which looks for fare drops, but in this economy, I doubt you'll be seeing any huge fare cuts.

LA to Sydney is 14 hours so to Cairns would be an hour or so less

I would say about 18-20 hours. That includes getting from plane to plane because I doubt you will be able to find a non-stop flight very easily.
